5 Most Beautiful Towns and Villages to Visit in Lake Como
Prologue
In the Summer of 2021, we decided to set off for a marathon road run, A Summer Escape to Northern-Central Italy and San Marino | A 6000 km Road Trip across Milan, Tuscany, Florence, Pisa, San Marino, and Como from the Netherlands | Travel Itinerary, Tips, and Tricks, which was our first travel outside the Netherlands since December 2019, as we waited to first get vaccinated against COVID-19. Therefore, it goes without saying that this trip after almost 1.5 years gave us back the long-lost feeling of freedom and hence will hold an emotional place in our hearts forever. So based on our experience, today I’m going to take you along with me on a ride across the 5 most beautiful towns and villages in Lake Como. Let the journey begin!
Welcome to Lake Como
The inverted letter ‘Y’ shaped (or ‘lambda’ for science students) lake of Como (also known as Lario) is a gorgeous glacial lake in the Lombardy region of Italy, 50 km north of Milan. After Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, it is the third-largest lake in Italy with a surface area of 146 sq. km. With a depth of 425 m, it is the fifth-deepest lake in Europe. Home to picturesque villages, elegant villas, luscious green mountains, and sparkling blue shores, Lake Como is a place where gleaming red Ferraris glide through little lakeside towns and aristocrats, royals, and celebs vacation in neoclassical villas. Here the 2006 Bond film ‘Casino Royale’ was partly shot and many of the opulent lakeside hotels are priced like 007 properties. Hollywood star George Clooney is known to spend the summer months at his 25-room Villa Oleandra in Laglio on Lake Como.
Reading all of this, you must be wondering what is then left for the commoners like us. Plenty! With breathtaking Alps vistas and a variety of activities, it's the perfect place for a romantic getaway, outdoor adventures, swimming in rocky coves, getting high on loads of fresh pasta, or simply strolling through the winding lanes of idyllic small towns and villages around the lake while eating gelato. That’s what I call "la dolce vita!"

4. Como
Como is the city on whose name the Lake of Como has been named. This city, which has long served as a playground for the wealthy, draws both tourists and Milanese fashionistas who arrange vacations around the lake region. But for all my fellow Electronics and Communications engineer fraternity, Como is the city where Alessandro Volta lived, so this city is like a pilgrimage for us. For the uninitiated, Alessandro Volta invented the first Voltaic cell or the battery and is known to be the father of commercial electricity. The term ‘Voltage’ represents the potential difference between two points or the unit of potential difference itself which is ‘Volt’ is named after him. So next time you touch that power socket bare feet and get a 220 ‘Volt’ shock, you are basically paying homage to him.
Things to Do in Como
Gate Tower - The mayor of Como, Hubert de 'Olevano, commissioned the construction of the 40-meter-tall Gate Tower in 1192 to guard the city's entry. Two much smaller pentagonal towers that replicated the design of the arches extending inward flanked the large tower in the fourteenth century. They were fortified with a semicircular bastion in the sixteenth century (remains of which can be seen in a nearby subway). Gate Tower is one of the most intriguing specimens of Romanesque military architecture in Italy.
Como Cathedral (Duomo) - The Duomo of Como is unquestionably a stunning structure, possibly one of the most prominent Gothic churches in Northern Italy. “Il Duomo di Como” or the Como Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was constructed over the course of about 400 years. The cupola was completed by architect Filippo Juvarra during the first half of the 18th century.
Tempio Voltiano - This museum is dedicated to the life and work of Alessandro Volta. Visitors can learn about Volta's life and scientific discoveries and view some of his original instruments and equipment including the first battery made by him.
Piazza Cavour - This bustling town square is home to a number of cafes and restaurants, as well as the Teatro Sociale, a beautiful theater that hosts a wide range of cultural events.
Brunate Funicular - This funicular railway takes visitors up to the charming hilltop town of Brunate, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Como-Brunate Bike Trail - From Como to Brunate, there is a beautiful cycling path that provides visitors with a unique perspective of the region's breathtaking splendor.

5. Brunate
Brunate is a small town located in the hills above the city of Como. Situated at an altitude of 712 meters (2,336 feet) above sea level, Brunate offers breathtaking views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains, making it a popular destination for tourists. One of the most convenient ways to reach Brunate is by taking the funicular railway that connects the town to Como. The funicular, which has been in operation since 1894, takes visitors on a scenic ride through the forested hillsides before arriving in Brunate. The journey takes only a few minutes, but it's a memorable experience in itself.
Things to Do in Brunate
Hiking - Once in Brunate, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities. The town has several hiking trails that offer stunning views of Lake Como and the Alps, including the famous "Path of the Wayfarer" that connects Brunate to the town of Bellagio on the other side of the lake. The hike is relatively easy, taking about two hours to complete, but it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.
Brunate Lighthouse - Another popular attraction in Brunate is the lighthouse, which was built in 1927 and is still in operation today. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The climb can be a bit strenuous, but it's definitely worth it for the views.
San Maurizio Church - Another must-see attraction in Brunate is the San Maurizio church, which dates back to the 16th century. The church is renowned for its beautiful frescoes and paintings, which depict scenes from the life of Saint Maurizio. Visitors can also admire the intricate architecture and design of the church, which is a testament to the rich history and culture of the region.
Restaurants and Cafes - In addition to hiking and sightseeing, Brunate is also known for its excellent restaurants and cafes. The town has several dining options that serve traditional Italian cuisine, including fresh seafood and pasta dishes. Visitors can also enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine while taking in the views from one of the many outdoor cafes.
Visiting Lake Como
Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Lake Como is during the spring (April to June) and early fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are less compared to the peak summer season. The gardens are in bloom during spring, while the early fall offers a tranquil atmosphere and warm water for swimming. However, like us, if you can travel only during the school holidays you can choose to travel to Como in the summer (July to August) but it can be quite hot and very crowded.
Number of Days to Stay: A stay of 3 to 4 days is ideal for exploring Lake Como. This allows enough time to visit the charming towns around the lake, take a boat tour, relax at lakeside cafes, and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or villa visits.
Best Place to Stay: The best towns to stay in are Varenna, Bellagio, or Como. Bellagio offers luxury hotels, stunning views, and elegant gardens. Varenna is quieter and more romantic, with picturesque streets and easy ferry connections. Como is the largest town, ideal for those looking for a more urban base with shops, restaurants, and train connections. We stayed on the outskirts of the beautiful town of Varenna. But one thing I want to tell you is that Lake Como is one of those places where paying more money (especially, if you are late with your bookings) to get a hotel on the waterfront with parking is worth it. Just leave your car at the hotel and travel on foot within the towns and take the ferry to travel between towns since parking can be practically non-existent during the busy months.
Best Way to Arrive: The nearest international airport is Milan Malpensa, followed by Milan Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio. From Milan, you can take a train to Como or Varenna-Esino. From there, ferries connect the towns around the lake. Renting a car is also an option for more flexibility, though parking can be challenging in some towns as I mentioned above. We drove to Como from Sienna in our own car.
Best Local Mode of Conveyance: The best way to get around Lake Como is by ferry, which connects the major towns like Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. Ferries are scenic and efficient. Renting a car is a good option for exploring less accessible areas, but narrow and winding roads require careful driving. Walking is perfect for exploring towns, and bike rentals are available for active travelers. Water taxis are also available as a private and luxurious way to travel across the lake.
