Welcome to the Netherlands - ‘The Land of Flowers’

When you think of the Netherlands, the first thing that comes to your mind is an endless ocean of vibrant flower fields. That’s why it has been very aptly dubbed as the ‘The Land of Flowers’ though it’s often equated to ‘The Land of Tulips.’ But to be honest, this beautiful country has a lot more to offer beyond just tulips when it comes to horticulture. Being the largest exporter of flowers in the world, the Netherlands makes up around two-thirds of the world’s total floral sales. And it goes without saying that they aren’t all just tulips. Every year, during the spring months of mid-March to mid-May, the whole country transforms into a vast ocean of flowers. It starts with cherry blossoms, crocuses, daffodils, and hyacinths between mid-March and mid-April, followed by the famous tulips between mid-April and mid-May. But what many of us don’t know is that during summer, we can also find lavenders in the Netherlands. Today I’m going to tell you about the best places where you can find lavenders in the Netherlands. So let’s begin!

1. Lady Lavendel, Noordwijk

There are mainly two farms where you can find lavenders in the Netherlands. The first of them is ‘Lady Lavendel’ in Noordwijk in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland, very close to Hoofddorp, where I live. To reach the farm, you have to drive amidst the beautiful tulip, hyacinth and daffodil bulb fields that bloom during spring. Then suddenly, you see a purple glow in the middle of the ocean of bulb fields. And you know that you have arrived at ‘Lady Lavendel’.

Here, you get to know the diversity of lavenders like the ‘Lavandula Angustifolia’ (spike lavender or true lavender that grows on dry, rocky slopes of Southern Europe known for its aromatic oil used in cosmetics) or the ‘Lavandula Stoechas’ (crested lavender or butterfly lavender that grows on dry, rocky slopes of Mediterranean coastal towns known for its fantastic fragrance). They are all different in color, size, flowering, and harvest time. You can also learn handicrafts in the adjoining wooden farm ‘Houten Hoeve’ or book a photo shoot.

In addition to these, you can also find the following products in the adjoining store -

  • Lavender honey from the bees produced at the adjoining wooden farm ‘Houten Hoeve’

  • Different types of jams made from lavenders

  • Scented sachets with lavender buds

  • Pure lavender oil and lavender water

  • Dried lavender flowers and bunches of lavender (available from July)

Best time to visit: The best time to visit for seeing lavenders is mid-July. But during spring (mid-March to mid-May), you can also find tulips and hyacinths here. So you can choose your time of travel based on what you would like to see.

Address: Vogelaardreef 20, 2204 AA Noordwijk

Parking: When you reach here, you can park on the side of the main road beside the Noordwijk part of the ‘Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen’ or ‘Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes.’ Then you have to cross the main road to enter the farm.

Opening Hours: The farm is open for entry always. However, the store is open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For more information on the opening hours, please visit their website mentioned below.

2. Granny’s Bouquet, Stroe

The second farm where you can see, smell, feel and pluck lavenders is ‘Granny’s Bouquet’ lavender garden in the small village of Stroe in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The name ‘Granny’s Bouquet’ comes from a new lavender variety that’s cultivated in their garden along with various other lavender varieties. In the picking garden, you can pick flowers to your heart’s content and compose your own bouquet. Finally, in the tearoom, you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea, with fresh apple pie, which’s included in the entry fee of €6.

Along with the said, the tearoom also houses the product sales. Everything that has anything to do with lavender is for sale here.

  • Lavender soap

  • Lavender oil

  • Lavender perfume

  • Lavender candles

  • Lavender syrup

  • Bouquets

  • Scented pads

  • Pottery

  • Crockery pieces

  • Candleholders

Apart from the lavenders, the ‘Granny’s Bouquet’ also has several other beautiful species of flowers in their garden.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit for seeing lavenders is mid-July to mid-August.

Address: Stroerweg 35, 3776MG, Stroe

Parking: Big parking 50 meters from the farm.

Entry Fee: To enter the lavender garden, you need to pay an entrance fee of €6, which includes one free coffee or tea with freshly baked apple cake. And trust me, it’s worth it.

Opening Hours: The farm is not open every day to visit. It has different opening days based on the month of the year. For more information on the opening hours, please visit their website mentioned below.
